Summer Sewing and Reading

As an insentive for my young reading student, her mom and I planned to let her make a pillow this year.  In past summers she has made several creative wallhangings with patchwork and then I helped her quilt them.

This time we went by a purchased pattern and Anna may enter it in the fair next year for her 4H group.

The pillow turned out so cute!  It was super easy to make.  Now that Anna has hers done, I want to make one to coordinate with a cute strawberry pillow I received in a swap last summer.

We usually put sewing the pillow as the last item on the schedule.  A few times Anna moved the schedule cards around and had us doing the sewing before the reading!

Quilting Fun

Because of her choices of jungle prints and animal skin print in the fabrics, she has appropriately entitled it the "Jungle House Quilt".  I think it turned out to be an awesome piece!

Anna gained proficiency with ironing this summer!

Creative Quilting With Kids

These are the two quilts we made at school with the help of Diana Swim from West Salem. We were able to have her come to our school four 5 whole days and she worked with the classes during their regular scheduled art time to do the design of both quilts and make background patterns on the fabric panels.
Much of the color came from sheets of tissue paper and some was from Pebo sunreactive paint. The plant and animal images in the main body of the quilt are appliques that were made by using Portfolio brand water soluble oil crayons. The border blocks were made using the same supplies. The narrow inner border as well as the binding were tie
dyed using a strong concentration of Kool Aid. Although both quilts have been bound, only one is ready to hang. The top quilt still has lots of places that need quilting. That's why you may see so many safety pins still attached to the quilt. I'll have to keep my focus on this during the year and add some more quilting. Perhaps they can both be done before the end of this school year. They are both very colorful and are interesting to look at. I hope we can find the right places to hang them in the school. If we ever did something like this again, I would make them a little smaller. These were overwhelming to quilt.

Quilts by Kids and Art Education

I'll soon have a couple of very special quilts to share with you. They were primarily designed by children, but the actual construction was done by our schools artist in residence, Diana Swim and myself. It has taken a while to do all the finishing touches, but they are nearly ready to hang in our school. I will try to get some pictures when I am at school today and post them this evening or tomorrow.

I have been considering starting a second blog in which I might talk about close up details of the art that I have my students do in class. I have been mulling about and I'm trying to think of a catchy name for an art education blog. Our students return to school next Monday and it would be fun to roll this out on the first day.
